Jack Daniels
Our Best-Selling & Most Dependable Fly. It's a proven winner on the Caney Fork River and other nearby tailwaters. The Jack Daniels was created by Cory Cuje of Old Dominion Trout Bum. The substrate of our local rivers are olive-colored and full of moss, grass, and algae due to the nutrient-rich water coming through the dams. Our olive variant of the Jack Daniels (even though it was originally created to be more of a mayfly pattern) closely resembles the sow bug. The sow bug is the #1 diet item of trout as proven by stomach pumps on the Caney Fork, Obey River, and Elk River. A Size 16 seems to always get the job done... but when Baetis are in the system (or during the winter), I usually reach for a size 18. Near the dam... I prefer a size 20--which can resemble multiple aquatic insects at that size (baetis, sowbugs, scuds, and even midges).
